1956: The dormitory of the nuns and the royal palace are rediscovered

Photo: Föreningen Gamla Vadstena

In connection with the move of Birgitta Hospital to the new hospital district in 1951, there were plans for new utilization of the old monastery building. At that time, two important discoveries were made: the main building of the nunnery with the dormitory was preserved, and the building originally consisted of the former royal palace of the Folkunga dynasty from the 13th century. It was assumed earlier that the palace had been demolished when the monastery was built.

In 2016, the 60th anniversary of the discovery was celebrated on August 26 and November 19.

Greetings from Vadstena: The Asylum at the beginning of the 20th century

AAfter the sugar factory in Vadstena went bankrupt, the Asylum was built on the foundations of the sugar factory in 1895 as a mental hospital for men of the third class.

The picture postcard shows the Asylum at the beginning of the 20th century and the hospital railway. On the left of the intersection of Slottsgatan, Järnvägsgatan, Storgatan, and Rådhustorget, you can see the Vadstena Stadshotell (Hotel Bellevue).
